Bump in the Road: There's Cancer Spread

So...here's the latest. I'm afraid it's another bump in the road. Zane's bone biospy results show that he does have the "disease" (how they say the C word around here) in his pelvic bone area. It has his doctor quite surprised as the spine and spinal fluid looked clear. So, the game plan has changed. Zane will now have chemo prior to radiation (was the other way around). Today, in just a few hours, he will go into surgery to have his central line (port for insertion of meds) inserted. This will be an internal IV that will enter just below his collar bone, attaching to a main artery that leads to his heart. The IV will run through just above the heart. This is a common procedure at St. Jude. They perform about 600 of these a year and while it will require sedation, it's a less than 30 minute surgery, so Zane's anesthesia hangover should be short-lived. Nearly every patient here at St. Jude will receive an "A" line or central line during their course of treatment.
After a short recovery, Zane will then be admitted as an inpatient to receive his first course of chemo. It's not clear yet how long he will be inpatient. My guess is just overnight, but we will know more very soon. Our pre-op appointments are just about to get underway.
So, off we go. Making lemonade with these lemons. Remember...we are in the best place possible.
